What are the levels of breathability of textiles?

May 16, 2022

The textile breathability rating refers to how much water or moisture can pass through the fabric from the inside out.

How is it graded?
There are different ways to measure the breathability of fabrics, the two most common are g/m² and RET.

1. First, the air permeability grade, g/m²
When fabric breathability is measured in g/m², it indicates how many grams of moisture can pass through a square meter of fabric in 24 hours. The higher the degree of pass, the higher the grade, and the more breathable the fabric is.

The grades passed are:
1.5,000 – 10,000g/m²: Low breathability levels, satisfactory warmth for more static activities like resort skiing.
2.10,000 – 15,000g/m²: Medium breathability level. It is suitable for light movement in all weather conditions.
3.15,000 – 20,000g/m² and above: Good breathability level. It is best suited for highly dynamic activities.

2. Air permeability grade, RET
RET stands for Evaporative Heat Transfer Resistance. The RET rating indicates the resistance of a fabric to water vapour. RET value measured in m²Pa/W (Pa = water vapour pressure in air).

RET is the only method that takes comfort into account. The lower the RET value, the better the breathability of the fabric. Therefore, it feels more comfortable during activities.

RET 0-6: The fabric is very breathable. Comfortable at higher activity rates.
Check out these jackets with a RET score of 0-6: great breathable jackets.
RET 6 to 13: The fabric is very breathable. Comfortable at moderate activity rates.
You can choose some jackets with this RET value: good breathability rating.
RET 13 to 20: The fabric still finds breathability satisfactory, but is uncomfortable at high activity rates.
RET 20 to 30: Slightly breathable. Moderately comfortable at low activity rates.
RET 30+: Airtight. uncomfortable.
